Running with the Elephants

Stepping into Africa is like stepping back in time, as in millions of years. Accompanied by Iggy, the OK Labs fearless mascot, I navigated the Serengeti plains in Northern Tanzania with wonder and, rightfully, a little bit of fear. There is a world order in the wild. In order to see Africa on Safari, Iggy and I followed three rules:

  1. Stay in your tent at night - see item number 2
  2. Stay in the Jeep during the day - lions, cheetahs, and leopards will see you as prey if you are not in the vehicle
  3. Don’t make any loud noises when there are elephants around - it makes them angry; they might flip over your vehicle, or even charge at you

The stories and experiences of Africa are many. Who knew there were so many stars in the sky?  or that the night sounds of Africa pulse with animal voices and traveling hooves?  or that mating lions in our camp at night would simultaneously heighten our adrenaline and desire to see them in the act? One of the most compelling memories of Africa, however, was the steady and playful procession of a herd of elephants on their way to a watering hole.

With the help of our guide, Iggy managed to stay alive and in the jeep for most of the time…
