Security by Obscurity — Alive and Well at the Competition

The FAQ of a competitor (who uses "secure" in every other sentence) has been a source of amusement before. It provides another gem, also in the section that discusses the security of their product:

"... hypervisor is small, and written in assembly language. [...] As an assembly coded product it is also much more ...

What are capabilities?

OKL4 2.1 is the first public release of an L4 microkernel (and, I believe, the first commercial modern microkernel or hypervisor) that uses capability-based protection. But what does this mean?

Capabilities (caps) are an operating-system security concept. They are tokens conveying access rights, often likened to keys. ...

OKL4 teaching slides published

I'm making my L4 teaching/training slides available for general use, see the web site of my UNSW course on Advanced Operating Systems. The slides contain some general microkernel and L4 material, as well as a detailed discussion of the OKL4 API (specifically the OKL4 2.1 release).

This is the structure:

  • Week 01 ...

Open-source virtualization — the right match for embedded Linux

This is the title of a talk I gave at LinuxWorld in San Francisco this week. I thought people might be interested in the slides for the talk. They list a number of use cases for embedded virtualization (although limited to what is relevant to the Linux community, there are more beyond that). I also summarise the ...

Intrepid Iggy made it back without injury from the Arctic Circle

Iggy and the team set out on a trek crossing the Akshayuk Pass. It's situated within the Auyuittuq National Park on Baffin Island in the Nunavut of Canada's arctic. The meaning of Auyuittuq in Inuktitut is "the land that never melts" (this was before the glaciers started receding). This was a very ambitious trek not ...

When does size matter?

Since many embedded systems are highly resource-constrained, it is important for developers to understand how much memory a particular software component requires. However, like with any other form of benchmark, the devil is in the detail, and it is essential to make an "apples to apples" comparison. This is important ...

Iggy heads to the Arctic Circle

While it is steamy hot in Chicago I have decided to embark on an epic journey to the Canadian Arctic Circle. But it really wouldn’t be a properly led trip without Iggy in the lead. Yes, I know Iggy’s natural terrain is not frozen icebergs and expansive moraines. But he is tough and will most likely be leading the pack. ...

Muddying waters

In a recent article our competitors, tell the story of the two OSes (Linux and RTOS) and argue that a system virtual machine is the right approach to make this work on a single (DSP) core. However, they really are pulling wool over the readers' eyes.

While in the introduction they pretend to be talking about system ...

Are microkernels and hypervisors converging?

I was asked this question by a reader of my recent article Microkernels Rule! in embedded.com. The short answer is that hypervisors are becoming microkernels.

Yes, there's a convergence, but it's mostly the hypervisors that are changing. Microkernels have been successfully used as hypervisors
for over ten years (L4Linux ...
