WirelessOpen Kernel Labs' OKL4 provides wireless phone and Internet appliance manufacturers with the ability to build complex multimedia applications while protecting IP and increasing the robustness of these products. |
For example, wireless handsets are expected to execute untrusted code downloaded by the user. Such code could be malicious, and exploit security weaknesses in the embedded software to steal the user's private data, or even launch an attack on the wireless network.
Strong defenses must be built into the embedded software, by putting strong, hardware-enforced protection boundaries around system components, enforced by a trustworthy operating system. Vulnerabilities are reduced by running almost all code in unprivileged mode, including de-privileged operating systems.
Currently, major manufacturers of wireless devices and chipsets are securing their applications with OK's proven OKL4 microkernel and virtualization technology.
