The art and science of installation

For better or worse, self-guided embedded software installation remains an art form. Installation results can be hard to reproduce and harder to guarantee. Inhibitors to streamlining the process exist in both the development host and embedded target systems. On the host, those inhibitors include complexity and uniqueness of development environments, scope and restrictions of corporate IT infrastructure, and the particulars of legacy tools and source code architecture. On the target, obstacles include CPU architecture, complex address maps, highly purposed devices and drivers, embedded file systems, and the particulars of system initialization and run-time libraries.

As such, "one size fits all" installation programs and instructions for mobile development software do not yield easy and optimized target deployment (if they work at all).
