Gernot Heiser, CTO and co-founder of Open Kernel Labs will present on L4.verified at the Open Group conference in San Francisco, California. Heiser will report on the work done at NICTA on a formally verified L4 microkernel as a basis for highly secure systems.

OKL4 is a second-generation microkernel known for its high message-passing performance. Over the years it has been used as a platform for building a number of special-purpose and general-purpose operating-system platforms, and as a low-overhead hyper visor for para-virtualized Linux systems.

Commercially developed and supported by Open Kernel Labs, OKL4 is presently being used in a number of embedded devices, including deployments in tens of millions of mobile-phone handsets.

Heiser’s talk will provide an overview of the work and discuss some of the experiences gained when trying to formalize and verify a commercially-deployable performance-focused kernel of around 10,000 lines of code.
