Heiser Awarded Scientist of the Year; Engineering, Mathematics, and Computer Sciences Category

New South Wales Office for Science and Medical Research (OSMR) named Professor Gernot Heiser as a NSW Scientist of the Year 2009 Category Winner.

Professor Heiser was honored for building and leading one of the world's foremost computer operating systems research groups. Heiser’s group has built a number of operating systems, including the L4 microkernel, which forms the core technology of Open Kernel Labs (OK Labs), where he serves as Chief Technology Officer. OK Labs has to-date shipped its microkernel operating system in more than 300 million mobile phones.

Gernot joined NICTA as the leader of the Embedded Operating Systems Group at the time of NICTA's creation in late 2002. Prior to this, he has been a member of the academic staff at UNSW since 1991, from 2002 as Professor of Operating Systems; since January 2009 as the inaugural the John Lions Chair of Operating Systems.

The NSW Scientist of the Year Awards were established in 2008 to recognize and reward the State’s leading researchers for cutting edge work that generates economic, health, environmental, or technological benefits for NSW.
The NSW Scientist of the Year 2009 Award is designed to engage and involve the general public as well as the NSW research community, to promote the value of science, and encourage science careers.
