Mobile Virtualization Leader More than Doubles Handset Deployments; Introduces Solutions for Mass-market Smartphones, and Secure Government Mobility
Chicago - February 1, 2011 - Open Kernel Labs (Open Kernel Labs), the leading provider of embedded virtualization software for smartphones, tablets, and other connected devices, today announced it has completed calendar year 2010 with increased revenues and many new customers including a leading American wireless device manufacturer, a large Chinese device manufacturer, and a major U.S. defense contractor.
Open Kernel Labs also expanded its partnership with a leading chipset supplier, which will be shipping all its future applications processors for smartphones as virtualization ready with OKL4, Open Kernel Labs’ mobile virtualization solution. Over the past twelve months, deployment of OKL4 doubled from 500 million mobile handsets to more than one billion mobile devices.
In 2010, Open Kernel Labs, along with its partner/investor, Citrix Systems, introduced the “Nirvana Phone” – a superphone proof-of-concept built with the OKL4 Microvisor and the Citrix Receiver Virtual Desktop Agent. The Nirvana Phone exemplifies mobile enterprise virtualization, providing secure mobile access to enterprise assets and applications.
Open Kernel Labs introduced a “Mass-market Smartphone” solution to streamline development and delivery of low-cost, mass-market smartphones based on Google Android for less than USD$100 wholesale. By consolidating application, multimedia, and baseband radio processing onto a single CPU, Open Kernel Labs customers can bring a full smartphone user experience to consumers at feature phone prices.
The company also unveiled SecureIT Mobile Government, a software and services solution that enables mobile OEMs, mobile network operators (MNOs), integrators, and government contractors to build secure wireless communications devices from commercial off-the-shelf hardware and software. SecureIT Mobile is already being built into military-grade smartphone models, and a version of this product will soon be available for enterprise as well.
“2010 was an amazing year for Open Kernel Labs and for the mobile/wireless industry. We doubled deployments, expanded product offerings, and gained some major new customers,” said Steve Subar, Co-founder and CEO, Open Kernel Labs. “In 2011, Open Kernel Labs will continue its leadership in mobile virtualization, building on our success and further expanding into the enterprise mobility market.”
Open Kernel Labs appointed Citrix Vice President of Business Development, Frank Artale, as chairman of the board, and added two new senior executives – Carl Nerup as Vice President of Business Development, and Grant Cushny as Director of Professional Services. The company expanded into Asia, cementing a distribution partnership with MDS Technology, a leading Korean provider of embedded solutions. Open Kernel Labs also partnered with security industry leaders, McAfee, Inc. and Sirrix AG.
This past year, Fierce Wireless online publication named Open Kernel Labs to its annual "Fierce 15" list of the top privately held wireless companies of 2010, and the company again made the cut for the Vision Mobile 100 Million Club. Open Kernel Labs also received recognition with an Editor’s Choice Products Award from Embedded Computing Design Magazine, and was a finalist in three competitions -- the Global Security Challenge, the EE Times Sixth Annual Creativity in Electronics (ACE) Awards, and the Red Herring 100 Global Awards. Open Kernel Labs executives presented at GigaOm Mobilize, the Embedded Systems Conference, ARM TechCon, and the Smartphone Developer Conference.
Open Kernel Labs is the global leader in virtualization software for mobile/wireless devices and embedded systems. Open Kernel Labs software is deployed on more than 1.1 billion mobile phones worldwide. Semiconductor suppliers, mobile OEMs, mobile network operators, and enterprise IT depend on Open Kernel Labs to deliver high performance solutions that decrease BOM cost, reduce complexity, and speed time-to-market.
