Open Kernel Labs Software Powers Toshiba Mobile Phones

June 30, 2007

CHICAGO AND SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA -June 29, 2007— Open Kernel Labs (OK), a global provider of operating systems and virtualization technology, today announces its OKL4 microkernel is in use on Toshiba Corporation’s W47T mobile phones handset which has been on sale in Japan since late 2006. OK’s open source OKL4 microkernel technology provides embedded-systems developers with a flexible and high-performance platform supporting virtualization, security, legacy reuse, IP protection and license separation. Its open platform protects communications firmware from interference through fault containment.

“This represents the first end-user deployment of modern virtualization technology on mobile-phone handsets,” said Steve Subar, CEO and co-Founder of Open Kernel Labs. “It demonstrates OK’s position as the leading provider of OS and virtualization technology for mobile wireless devices.”

OK’s engineering team has a 10-year track record of operating-systems innovation and unbeaten performance world-records on a range on architectures, including ARM, MIPS and Itanium. OK’s flagship product OKL4 is the result of this sustained innovation. It is based on an extremely small, open source, microkernel that efficiently manages hardware resources and forms the basis of OK’s virtualization technology. The small size of the microkernel makes it feasible to develop a mathematical proof of the correctness of its implementation.

“This deployment shows that OK combines innovation with industrial-strength implementation and support. It demonstrates OK’s ability to turn research leadership into customer benefits,” said Dr Gernot Heiser, CTO and co-founder of OK.
