MEDIA ALERT

Who: Abi Nourai, Open Kernel Labs

What: Session 3, "How Secure is Your Embedded Device?"

When: October 21, 2008, 11:30 AM

Where: Embedded Conference- Scandinavia, Stockholm, Sweden

Abi Nourai will present “How Secure is Your Embedded Device?” at the Embedded Conference- Scandinavia. Nourai’s presentation will be aimed at embedded system developers concerned about the level of security in their design and the potential impact of the various types of threat to that security.

Discussing both current and newly-emerging threats to embedded system security, Nourai will describe an architectural approach which allows the embedded system developer to implement device security at an appropriate level to meet the needs of their particular application, while still keeping the impact on system performance to a minimum.

Nourai will then demonstrate how to further enhance the security of all the software components of an embedded system environment and how this particular problem relates to intelligent mobile devices.

Major topics of Nourai's presentation will include:

  • New security threats to embedded systems, with particular examples from mobile device development
  • How to run large application OS¹es such as Linux, Symbian and WindowsCE safely and securely
  • Why device drivers are a particularly difficult security issue and what to do about it
  • How the use of a secure inter-process communication mechanism to implement “Segregated Capabilities” provides an additional line of defense against intrusion and/or unstable code
  • Using multiple secure partitions within a system to provide the required level of security for particular applications
  • How an open source software environment can be just as secure as a proprietary system
