M2E and Nirvana Phone

Ubiquitous virtualization

Most computer users think of virtualization as a means to run Windows® applications on a Macintosh® or Linux apps on a Windows host. In enterprise, virtualization usually refers to creating and hosting virtual blades and servers to meet load demands and to host legacy applications. Mobile virtualization, an increasingly ubiquitous, but still novel technology, provides analogous capabilities on handheld devices.

Desktop, server, and mobile virtualization do not exist in isolated silos. These various types of virtualization share related technology, share many use cases, and can act in synergy to implement a new computing paradigm.

Mobile-to-enterprise virtualization (M2E): BYO Device to Work

In response to a study in 2008 -- Mobile Access to Enterprise Applications, Citrix and OK Labs, global leaders in application delivery and mobile virtualization, have joined together to enable a unique end-to-end virtualization solution for mobile access to enterprise and desktop applications and data.

Mobile-to-Enterprise Virtualization (M2E) comprises a set of solutions developed by Citrix and OK Labs for delivering enterprise applications and data to mobile devices. Using Citrix Delivery CenterTM infrastructure and the OKL4 Microvisor, M2E offers mobile deployers and end users fast, flexible, and secure access to enterprise applications and data any time, from anywhere, through a simple, consistent virtualization infrastructure.

The mobile enterprise end-point

M2E virtualization enables device OEMs, mobile network operators (MNOs), and enterprise IT to deliver enterprise applications and content to any mobile device through an OK Labs implementation of the Citrix Receiver™ for the OKL4 Microvisor.

The Nirvana Phone – leave your laptop at home

Building naturally on Mobile-to-Enterprise (M2E) virtualization, OK Labs and Citrix delivered the next step of M2E with the Nirvana Phone Reference

If smartphones are a mobile phone combined with a PDA, then nirvana phones are smartphones with a full-sized display, keyboard and mouse, virtual desktop, and OKL4 mobile virtualization. Nirvana phones use mobile virtualization to deliver the full productivity experience, replicating the home or work environment from any location with wireless coverage.

The nirvana phone takes smartphones to the next level by bringing M2E from paradigm to platform, and ultimately to product. As HD video and other capabilities come online in mobile chipsets, Citrix and OK Labs are working together to give OEMs a clear path to building handsets that meet the needs of IT organizations and mobile workers alike, delivering virtual desktops and applications to virtualized mobile devices.

Who benefits?

  • Enterprise IT - by addressing corporate security requirements for corporate data, while meeting end-user workflow and personalization preferences
  • Mobile phone users - with the ability to navigate, open, view, and access enterprise applications and data quickly and securely; M2E isolates and protects enterprise content in the corporate partition of mobile phones, while enabling users to use a single mobile device for both their personal and corporate lives; This makes it possible for enterprise IT to implement a bring your own device (BYOD) strategy for enterprise mobile phone users
  • Device OEMs and channels - by reducing costs and shortening development cycles, and by growing device sales to the enterprise
  • Semiconductor Suppliers - by saving time/money with a common and consistent software architecture, portable across a broad range of processor platforms
  • MNOs - by enabling and growing revenues from enterprise services pushed to mobile phones

Mobile phone users and enterprise IT leverage the best of both worlds

OK Labs Secure HyperCellTM Technology delivers a seamless experience to enterprise IT and the mobile phone users they serve - on a single shared/partitioned device. By hosting the Citrix Receiver and other corporate applications in a secure OKL4 cell managed by enterprise IT, M2E enables the best of both worlds to enterprise IT and enterprise mobile phone users.
